Good Morning America has jumped on the book club bandwagon.
The ABC morning show launched a club called “Cover to Cover” on Wednesday, with Angie Cruz’s novel Dominicana as its inaugural pick.
“We’re going to be showcasing diverse and compelling authors telling both fiction and nonfiction stories,” GMA anchor Robin Roberts said. She said Cruz’s novel “really stood out to our staff.”
“It’s a story about strength, about sacrifice, finding your voice, and the perfect novel to kick off our new series,” she said.
Cruz appeared on a video following Roberts’ announcement, saying, “Hola, GMA! I’m so excited that my book Dominicana was chosen as your GMA book club pick. This book is so important to me because it’s inspired by my mother. I can’t wait to meet you all and see what you think.”
Cruz’s novel, published in September, follows a 15-year-old Dominican girl who moves to New York after being married off by her parents to an older man. A reviewer for Kirkus called the book “moving, sad, and sometimes disarmingly funny.”
In launching a book club, GMA follows NBC’s Today show, which is home to a club hosted by Jenna Bush Hager. That club’s latest pick was Ann Patchett’s The Dutch House.
CBS This Morning doesn’t have a book club of its own, but frequently covers Oprah Winfrey’s legendary club, which recently selected Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Water Dancer as its latest selection. (CBS This Morning is co-hosted by Gayle King, who is famously close friends with Winfrey.)
