Josh Brolin stopped by Good Morning America to discuss his new book, From Under the Truck.

Brolin’s memoir, published Tuesday by Harper, tells the story of his life, from growing up in California to his career as an actor in films including The Goonies, No Country for Old Men, and Milk.

GMA co-host Michael Strahan asked Brolin what made him decide to write a book.

“People keep asking me that, because I’m too young to write a book, but I’ve always written,” Brolin said. “I’ve had probably 90 journals since I was 7 or 8 years old.…I’ve written probably three books that I threw in a dark corner and let them accumulate dust, and finally, instead of buying a Porsche, I wrote a memoir. It’s my midlife crisis.”

Strahan noted that Brolin writes about his addiction problems in the memoir, as well as being “challenged” by his stepmother, Barbra Streisand.

“She didn’t challenge me, she was just honest,” Brolin said. “I’d walk into the house and say, ‘Hey, can I have a glass of wine?’ and she said, ‘Aren’t you an alcoholic?’…She was just always honest with me. It’s been, what, 27 years since [Streisand and James Brolin] have been together. I appreciate the honesty. I appreciate forthright women in my life, and I have a lot of them.”
