The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction announced its longlist, with 15 authors in the running for the award that celebrates “creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in Canada and the United States.”
Miranda July made the longlist for All Fours, alongside Rachel Kushner for Creation Lake. Both novels are also longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Eliza Barry Callahan was nominated for The Hearing Test, along with V Efua Prince for Kin: Practically True Stories, Anne Fleming for Curiosities, Mubanga Kalimamukwento for Obligations to the Wounded, Oonya Kempadoo for Naniki, Canisia Lubrin for Code Noir, and Sarah Manguso for Liars.
Also making the longlist were Cicada Summer by Erica McKeen, Bear by Julia Phillips, River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure, Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi, Everything Flirts: Philosophical Romances by Sharon Wahl, and Pale Shadows, written by Dominique Fortier and translated by Rhonda Mullins.
The Carol Shields Prize, named after the American Canadian author of novels including The Stone Diaries and Unless, was established in 2023. The previous winners are When We Were Sisters by Fatimah Asghar and Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananthan.
The shortlist for this year’s prize will be announced on April 3, with the winner announced on May 1.
