Vulture spoke with eight women who have accused The Sandman and Coraline author Neil Gaiman of sexual assault in a bombshell story that sent shock waves through the literary world.
Gaiman, one of the most prominent names in fantasy fiction, had been previously accused of sexual assault last year by five women; the allegations were detailed on the podcast Master. The Vulture report, written by Lila Shapiro, is based on her interviews with four of those women and four additional women.
The women accused Gaiman of engaging in sadistic and degrading sexual acts with them without their consent. Two of the accusers say that Gaiman engaged in sexual acts with them in the presence of his young son. Gaiman, through his representatives, has denied the allegations.
Shapiro notes that Gaiman’s career has been “marginally affected” by the allegations, with Amazon’s adaptation of Anansi Boys and the second season of Netflix’s The Sandman still set to air this year.
Social media users reacted with horror to the allegations against Gaiman. On the platform X, one user wrote, “may neil gaiman never know another day of peace as long as he lives.” Another posted, “Neil Gaiman is the prime example of a man who markets himself as the most kind & inclusive person in the room while everyone around him ignore his predatory and abusive behavior. the humble & progressive image he’s curated for himself is not an uncommon tactic among predators.”
