Anthony Hopkins will tell the story of his life and career in a memoir.
Summit Books will publish the acclaimed actor’s We Did OK, Kid, in the fall, the press announced in a news release, calling the book an “honest, moving, and long-awaited memoir.”
Hopkins, a native of Wales, was educated at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He was discovered by Laurence Olivier and served as the actor’s understudy in a series of plays at London’s Royal National Theatre.
He went on to star in films including The Lion in Winter, The Looking Glass War, The Elephant Man, and 84 Charing Cross Road. He received six Academy Award nominations over the course of his career, winning twice, for The Silence of the Lambs and The Father.
In the book, Summit says, Hopkins “takes a deeply honest look at the low points in his personal life. His addiction cost him his first marriage, his relationship with his only child, and nearly his life—the latter ultimately propelling him toward sobriety, a commitment he has maintained for nearly half a century.”
In a statement, Hopkins said, “There is a photograph I keep on my phone of my father and me on the beach when I was a child. I often tell that boy: We did OK, kid.’ I wonder how a boy from Wales, the son of a baker, got here. My entire life is a great mystery. This book is my story.”
We Did OK, Kid is scheduled for publication on Nov. 4.
