Netflix dropped a trailer for its upcoming film adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club.

Osman’s mystery novel, published in 2020 by Pamela Dorman/Viking, follows four friends in a British retirement village who discuss old, unsolved crimes. They switch their focus to a new case after a local developer is found slain. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the novel “a top-class cozy infused with dry wit and charming characters who draw you in and leave you wanting more, please.”

The film adaptation is directed by Chris Columbus and stars Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan, David Tennant, and Jonathan Pryce.

The trailer begins with Mirren talking to Kingsley and Brosnan, saying, “Our latest cold case is from May the 11th, 1973.” It cuts to a scene of a woman being thrown from a window.

Imrie enters the room where the trio are examining an evidence board and says, “Oh, my God! Isn’t this room usually for jigsaws?”

“Not on a Thursday, no,” replies Mirren in a deadpan voice.

Later, Imrie tells Mirren, Kingsley, and Brosnan, “There’s been a murder. An actual murder! Now we’ve got a real case to solve. Isn’t it wonderful?” After a beat, she adds, “Obviously, RIP and all that.”

The Thursday Murder Club is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 28.
