Netflix dropped a trailer for its upcoming limited-series adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s The Perfect Couple.
Hilderbrand’s novel, published in 2018 by Little, Brown, follows Greer Garrison Winbury and Tag Winbury, a wealthy couple whose son Benji is set to marry his fiancée, Amelia, on Nantucket. Right before the ceremony, a drowned body is found, turning the family and guests into murder suspects.
In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, “Sink into this book like a hot, scented bath...a delicious, relaxing pleasure. And a clever whodunit at the same time.”
The series adaptation is directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box) and written by showrunner Jenna Lamia (Good Girls). Greer and Tag are played by Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, respectively, while Billy Howle stars as Benji and Eve Hewson plays Amelia.
The trailer opens with a woman asking Kidman and Schreiber, “Do you think that it requires a kind of unconditional love to stay married 29 years?”
Schreiber responds, “Well, that and a healthy sex life. I think that’s really important.”
The trailer continues with shots of Nantucket as Frankie Valli’s 1967 single “Can’t Take My Eyes off You.” Later, it cuts to scenes of police officers removing a body from a beach. In one scene, Schreiber tells an officer, “This all feels a little dramatic for an accidental drowning.”
It ends with a voiceover from Kidman, who says, “We never know what’s going on in someone’s mind, really, no matter how close you are.”
The Perfect Couple is set to premiere on Netflix on Sept. 5.
