E. Lockhart will take readers back to the world of her bestselling young adult novel We Were Liars in a new book coming later this year.

Delacorte will publish Lockhart’s We Fell Apart in the fall, the press announced in a news release. It says the novel will feature “her signature beachy gothic atmosphere, family intrigue, and high-stakes romance.”

We Were Liars, published by Delacorte in 2014, follows Cady Sinclair, a teenage girl who experiences a traumatic incident while spending the summer on her wealthy family’s private island. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book as “riveting, brutal and beautifully told.”

The novel became a TikTok sensation years after its publication, and an Amazon Prime Video series adaptation is expected to premiere this summer. Lockhart published a prequel to the novel, Family of Liars, in 2022.

We Fell Apart, Delacorte says, is “an intricate, highly bingeable psychological suspense novel exploring themes of privilege, family legacy, freedom, and parental abandonment. In it, she ramps up the intrigue and unknowns, interweaving stories of present characters with those who came before them—interconnecting the story of the Sinclair family with a new ensemble of personalities.”

Lockhart announced news of her book in a TikTok video showing her running towards the camera, holding a cell phone with the novel’s cover, and then dancing on a rooftop to Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”

We Fell Apart is scheduled for publication on Nov. 4.
