Michael Connelly will introduce a new character in his latest novel, People magazine reports.

Little, Brown will publish the author’s Nightshade in the spring. The book will center around Stillwell, a detective in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Connelly made his literary debut in 1992 with The Black Echo, which introduced readers to Los Angeles police detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch. That character returned in 24 more novels, including The Concrete Blonde, Trunk Music, The Burning Room, and, most recently, The Waiting. The novels formed the basis for a television series, Bosch, that aired on Amazon Prime Video from 2014 to 2021; Amazon launched a spinoff series, Bosch: Legacy, in 2022.

Nightshade will follow Stillwell, who has been relieved of duty as a homicide detective in L.A. and assigned to patrol sleepy Catalina Island. While working there, he starts investigating the case of a body found in the harbor.

“I always get excited when I’m going out with a new character,” Connelly told People. “This time I double down with a new locale as well. Catalina is L.A.-close, but it’s an island and that makes it all new.”

Nightshade is slated for publication on May 20.
