N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy is headed to the big screen, Deadline reports.

TriStar Pictures won the rights to Jemisin’s series, one of the most acclaimed in recent science fiction/fantasy history. The books take place on a dystopian planet wracked by catastrophic climate change.

The trilogy debuted in 2015 with The Fifth Season, followed by The Obelisk Gate in 2016 and The Stone Sky in 2017. All three novels won the Hugo Award, and The Stone Sky also won the Nebula and Locus awards.

It’s not clear how many movies TriStar plans to make. Each of the novels in the trilogy is 400 to 500 pages long.

Jemisin, who will write the screenplays herself, confirmed news of the deal on Twitter, writing in a post that linked to the Deadline story, “Sssssso, folks have been asking me for updates on the Broken Earth tv/film adaptation for a while, and I haven’t been able to say anything...because a lot’s been happening. But at last, I can share.”

The Broken Earth isn’t the only trilogy by Jemisin making its way to the screen. In March, Deadline reported that Searchlight Television optioned the author’s Inheritancetrilogy for a series adaptation.
