A posthumous book from historian David McCullough is coming later this year.

Simon & Schuster will publish History Matters, edited by McCullough’s daughter Dorie McCullough Lawson and his researcher, Michael Hill, the press announced in a news release. It calls the book a “timely collection of McCullough’s essays that address the importance of history, especially our shared history as Americans.”

McCullough published his first book, The Johnstown Flood, in 1968. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his biographies Truman and John Adams and the National Book Award for his books The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006 and died in 2022, at the age of 89.

The essays in History Matters, Simon & Schuster says, “explore core American values to which we all subscribe, regardless of which region we live in, which political party we identify with, or how our backgrounds differ—values like optimism, determination, and character.”

“David McCullough was a beloved Simon & Schuster author for more than 50 years,” said Simon & Schuster president and CEO Jonathan Karp. “It is an honor to be able to publish him one more time. The artistry of his writing and the depth of his appreciation for the lessons of history are timeless.”

History Matters is scheduled for publication on Sept. 16.
