Reese Witherspoon’s latest book club pick is Charlotte McConaghy’s Wild Dark Shore.

McConaghy’s novel, published in March by Flatiron, follows a family on the fictional island of Shearwater, near Antarctica. Following a storm, a woman washes ashore, and the family nurses her back to health, soon realizing that she harbors a dark secret. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Readers won’t want to leave behind the imagined world of pain and beauty that McConaghy has conjured.”

The novel has been named one of the best books of the year by both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Witherspoon announced the book’s selection in a video on Instagram, saying, “It’s so good.…I’m not going to tell you what happens, but boy, that ending is so scary and tense, like the craziest end of a thriller movie. And I just love this book so much, it was so good.”

Also on Instagram, McConaghy reacted to her book’s selection, writing, “I am so thrilled to share that Wild Dark Shore has been selected as the Reese’s Book Club pick for November. An astonishing honour for this little book about love and nature and parenthood and ghosts. A huge thank you to @reesewitherspoon and her gorgeous team at @reesesbookclub—what an incredible community of readers and writers to be a part of.”
