Saturday Night Live grabbed headlines over the weekend for its guest appearance by Vice President Kamala Harris and for Chappell Roan’s bravura musical performances, but it also had an Easter egg for book nerds.

In a sketch about a fictional game show called What’s That Name?, two contestants, Ben and Margaret, compete to see who can come up with the names of various people. Ben, played by host John Mulaney, successfully identifies photographs of Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, and Jack Smith, the special counsel investigating former President Donald Trump.

Mulaney explains that he is deeply invested in the 2024 election and is then asked to identify Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate, who appeared in person on the episode. Mulaney is unable to come up with Kaine’s name, and the senator leaves, glaring at Mulaney.

Mulaney then gets into an argument with the show’s host, played by Michael Longfellow. “Why don’t you use your platform to go after the real problem?” Mulaney asks. “Do you realize if Donald Trump wins, we are going to be living in a real-life version of The Handmaid’s Tale?”

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” Margaret, played by Sarah Sherman, says. “I think that’s a bit of an oversimplification.”

Mulaney dismisses her, saying, “If you’d read that book, you’d see that we’re basically halfway there.”

Longfellow then asks Ben to identify another person: “This woman is the author of The Handmaid’s Tale.” A photograph of Sherman as Atwood appears on the screen. “I’ve been Atwood the whole time,” Sherman says.

Atwood linked to the sketch on the social platform X, writing, “It’s amazing what I get up to behind my own back.”
