Shohei Ohtani will make his literary debut next year with some help from his beloved dog.
HarperCollins will publish the baseball phenomenon’s Decoy Saves Opening Day, co-written by Michael Blank and illustrated by Fanny Liem, next winter, the press announced in a news release. It calls the book a “fun-filled romp” that “will inspire young readers and baseball fans alike to wind-up and play ball.”
Ohtani made history in 2023 by signing a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A pitcher and designated hitter, he led the team to a World Series victory in 2024.
His dog, Decoy, a Kooikerhondje, has become a star in his own right, making appearances on Ohtani’s Instagram account and throwing out (well, kind of) a ceremonial first pitch at a Dodgers game last August.
Ohtani’s book tells a fictionalized story of that first pitch, with Decoy forgetting his lucky baseball and trying his best to retrieve it and make it back to the stadium in time for his big moment.
“Decoy has been by my side through so many meaningful moments, and I’m excited to share a story that celebrates what makes him so special,” Ohtani said in a statement. “I hope it brings joy to young readers and that our support of animal rescue organizations helps more incredible dogs find loving homes.”
Decoy Saves Opening Day is scheduled for publication on February 3, 2026.
