The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction has announced its 2025 shortlist, with five authors in the running for the annual award honoring works of fiction “written by women and non-binary authors and published in the U.S. and Canada.”
Miranda July made the shortlist for All Fours, her novel that was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Women’s Prize for Fiction. The book is currently being developed as a television series for the Starz network.
Sarah Manguso was named a finalist for Liars, while Aube Rey Lescure made the shortlist for River East, River West, also a finalist for the Maya Angelou Book Award.
Rounding out the shortlist are Code Noir by Canisia Lubrin and Pale Shadows, written by Dominique Fotier and translated by Rhonda Mullins.
Alexandra Skoczylas, the prize’s CEO, said in a statement, “We are proud to support these authors in a time when our mission to amplify the voices of women and non-binary writers feels more vital than ever.”
The Carol Shields Prize, named after the American Canadian author of The Stone Diaries and Unless, was established in 2023. The previous winners are Fatimah Asghar for When We Were Sisters and V.V. Ganeshananthan for Brotherless Night.
The winner of this year’s award will be announced at a ceremony in Chicago on May 1.
