Rainbow Rowell’s Slow Dance is the latest pick for Reese Witherspoon’s popular book club.
Rowell’s novel—her first for adults since Landline in 2014—follows Shiloh and Cary, two friends who grew up together in Omaha, Nebraska, and reunite at a friend’s wedding after 14 years out of touch. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book, published last month by Morrow, as “a treat for fans of Rowell and of realistic romance.”
Witherspoon announced the novel’s selection on Instagram, saying in a video, “Hey, guys, I just finished the best book.…It makes me so nostalgic for high school.…It’s just so charming and beautiful and funny.”
Witherspoon said that the novel is her 99th book club pick, and added, “I am just blown away. I can’t believe it.” The actor established the club in 2017 with Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine as the first selection. Other picks include Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing, Kiley Reid’s Such a Fun Age, and Claire Lombardo’s The Most Fun We Ever Had.
Witherspoon wrote in another Instagram post that the club plans to announce its 100th pick in September, and will celebrate the milestone with “brilliant author spotlights, exciting giveaways, and all the book joy!”
