The Summer I Turned Pretty hasn’t aired its series premiere yet, but Amazon Prime Video has already renewed the show based on Jenny Han’s novel for a second season, Deadline reports.
Han’s 2009 young adult novel, the first in a trilogy that also includes It’s Not Summer Without Youand We’ll Always Have Summer, follows Belly, a 15-year-old girl who spends her summers at a beach house with her family and their friends.
The series adaptation stars newcomer Lola Tung as Belly. Other cast members include Jackie Chung (Someone Else), Rachel Blanchard (Fargo), Christopher Briney (Dali Land), and Gavin Casalegno (Walker).
Han wrote the pilot for the series and is also its showrunner. In an interview with Variety, she said taking on the latter role was “a baptism by fire.”
“Here I was co-running a room and co-running a show, and I think one of the biggest surprises is how much it is basically being [an] air traffic controller, and people come to you all day with problems to be resolved in a very managerial way,” she said. “You’re in charge of the story, and you have a lot of people who are coming to you for answers.”
Han’s books have been adapted for the screen before. Netflix produced three films based on her young adult novels To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean.
Season One of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which premieres June 17, is featured as one of Kirkus’ “4 New Adaptations To Watch in June.”
