Todd Haynes and Kate Winslet are reuniting for a limited series HBO adaptation of Hernan Diaz’s Trust, Variety reports.
Diaz’s novel, published in 2022 by Riverhead, follows a wealthy couple in early-20th-century New York whose lives might not be quite what they seem. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book as “a clever and affecting high-concept novel of high finance.”
The novel won the Kirkus Prize for fiction in 2022 and was one of two books, with Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead, to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2023.
Haynes, whose critically acclaimed films include Safe, Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, and May December, will direct the Trust adaptation and write the screenplay alongside Jon Raymond, the screenwriter and novelist (Freebird, Denial).
Winslet, known for her performances in films including Heavenly Creatures, Titanic, Revolutionary Road, and Avatar: The Way of Water will star in the series. She, Haynes, and Raymond previously worked together on another HBO limited series, the adaptation of James M. Cain’s 1941 novel, Mildred Pierce. Winslet won an Emmy Award for her performance in the series, while Haynes earned a directing nomination and a screenwriting nod with Raymond.
Diaz, Haynes, Winslet, and Raymond will all serve as executive producers on the adaptation.
