The winners of the Eisner Awards, given each year to recognize achievement in comic books and graphic literature, were announced at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki’s graphic novel Roaming took home three awards: best writer for Mariko Tamaki, best penciller/inker for Jillian Tamaki, and best graphic album–new.
Writer Chelsea M. Campbell and artist Laura Knetzger won the best publication for early readers prize for Bigfoot and Nessie: The Art of Getting Noticed, while Pedro Martín won in the best publication for kids category for Mexikid. Taking home the award for best publication for teens were Ryan North and Erica Henderson for Danger and Other Unknown Risks.
The best reality-based work award went to Bill Griffith for Three Rocks: The Story of Ernie Bushmiller: The Man Who Created Nancy, while Thien Pham won the best graphic memoir prize for Family Style: Memories of an American From Vietnam.
James Sturm and Joe Sutphin won the best adaptation from another medium prize for their graphic novel version of Richard Adams’ Watership Down. The best graphic album–reprint award went to the late Ed Piskor for Hip Hop Family Tree: The Omnibus.
The Eisner Awards, named for legendary cartoonist Will Eisner, were first given out in 1988. Previous winners have included Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Gene Luen Yang.
